Vintage Notes

In 2023, the Moon Mountain District experienced one of the longest growing seasons in a decade or more. With consistent, mild weather throughout the season and extended hang time, 2023 is an exceptional, high-quality, memorable vintage.

Winter and spring rains led to full reservoirs and healthy, saturated soils; ideal conditions as our vineyard headed into bud break. The mild, warm summer weather (72-75 degrees F) supported healthy canopy growth through bloom and set.

Though vineyards faced mildew pressure, clusters remained loose for good air flow. Relatively cool weather throughout the growing season in tandem with an abundance of sunshine allowed grape skins to ripen slowly. The Monte Rosso Vineyard harvest kicked off on September 20th; the Sémillon block harvest was completed on September 25th.

Cellar Notes

Block E56’s Sémillon is interplanted with Palomino, a variety that did not perform as well in 2023. We hand sorted it out upon receiving the fruit in the winery. The grapes went directly to the press and were left to settle overnight, then racked to barrels. The juice was allowed to start fermentation spontaneously and was later inoculated to finish fermentation.Élevage took place in a variety of vessels -a used French puncheon, a used French oak barrique and two Austrian barriques (one of them new); it was matured for 10 months.

Our Sémillon was fined, filtered and bottled on August 19th, 2024.
